NFC starting QB power ranking: Where Seahawks Russell Wilson stands
He’s a backup. He’s 2-0. He’s alright. Talk to me in 2 weeks and Jones will probably be ahead of him, maybe even Dwayne Haskins. Good backup, not a great starter.
Man, that was fast. Last year Kirk Cousins was the first player to get a fully guaranteed deal and looked like the tipping point to make the Vikings a Super Bowl favorite. This year, he has been mediocre.
The offense hasn’t allowed him to flourish, as the Vikings have ridden Dalvin Cook hard in the first quarter of the season. It isn’t a bad strategy, but with two horses like Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen, Cousins should be better when he does get to throw.
Cousins is just a game manager at this point without much upside to be more. For those reasons, I have him here at 11.
I still don’t think he’s all that good. Since leaving New England and being anointed the “next great 49ers QB”, Jimmy G has played in 11 games, and to his credit, has gone 9-2. And he is completing a very good 66% of his passes in that time too.
So why don’t I like him? He turns the football over. Kind of a lot. In his 11 starts with San Francisco, Garoppolo has thrown for 17 TD’s and rushed for 1 while throwing 12 interceptions and fumbling 7 times. Turnovers are killers and very few do it better than Jimmy G. All those turnovers without even pushing the ball down the field.
Garoppolo’s 9-2 record is a mirage, just like his image as a franchise QB.
I like him. He is functioning behind one of the worst offensive lines in the league with a rookie head coach who was so bad at Texas Tech, he was fired. He creates with his feet, has a strong arm, makes accurate throws and will only get better.
I’m not ready to crown him, but he looks like a good one. And all things being equal, I’d much rather have Murray running my offense than any of the names behind him on this list.
