Seahawks beat the league’s worst, but they’re ready for the best

The Seahawks are 3-1 after the first quarter of the season. Naysayers note the competition has been anything but tough. I say Seattle is ready for the best.

The Seahawks won their first two games in tight battles with the Bengals and Steelers. They lost their third contest to the Saints but bounced back with their best overall performance in their win over the Cardinals. That 3-1 record looks nice until you realize that those three wins were against teams that, at least so far, are really bad. Both the Bengals and Cardinals are winless and the Steelers only win is over the hapless Bengals. The combined record of Seattle’s victims is 1-11-1. That’s hardly the stuff of heroic tales. I still believe the Hawks are ready for the league’s best.

Mind you, I’m not saying the Rams are the league’s best team. They’re definitely a step up in competition for the Seahawks, though. But as I wrote in my last review of the NFC West, the Rams haven’t looked like the same team that dominated in 2018. Jared Goff threw for about a million yards last week but was picked off three times and lost a fumble that turned into six points for the wrong team. They certainly have plenty of dangerous weapons, but so does Seattle.

Last year the Rams won both games against the Seahawks. I’ll point out that Seattle didn’t have linebackers K.J. Wright or Mychal Kendricks for the first game, and missed Chris Carson and Kendricks for the second. Both Carson and Kendricks had big games last week, as you know. The Hawks will be back to full strength for this game, or reasonably so for the NFL.

Next. Hawks need to win turnover battle tonight. dark

Last week we also got a hint of what the new Seahawks defensive line can do. Jadeveon Clowney had his first pick-six and first interception ever. Ziggy Ansah got his first sack for the Seahawks as well. Above all, Seattle has Russell Wilson. He’s off to his best start ever. As for tonight’s game, Wilson threw for six touchdowns and zero interceptions against the Rams last year, so that’s not too shabby either. Seattle may not have faced the best competition yet, but they’re ready for it.
