Seahawks have big built-in moves without any trades
As the trade deadline approaches, there’s a lot of buzz over who the Seahawks may pick up. The thing is, they’ll get plenty of talent without a single deal.
The NFL trade deadline is October 29th. The Seahawks have been mentioned repeatedly as one of the most likely buyers on the market, and with good reason. General manager John Schneider has always been a major player in the mid-season trade game. They traded for Duane Brown at the deadline two years ago, after all. Here’s the thing, 12s. Seattle will get a big influx of talent in October, and Schneider won’t have to make a single call to get any of it.
The biggest name coming into the Seahawks fold is certainly a familiar one. That would be defensive tackle Jarran Reed. The bad news is, Reed has been serving a six-game suspension. The good news is, Seattle has one game left before Reed can return. We expected his absence to have a huge impact on the team’s play. In one respect that frightful prognosis came true. The Seahawks have just 10 sacks on the year, ranking 23rd in the league. On the other hand, the Hawks are 4-1. I’d rather the team be 4-1 with low sacks totals than 1-4 and rank third in sacks, like the Steelers.
Getting Reed back will be as good as getting a top player from another team via trade, with one very nice bonus. He won’t cost the Seahawks a thing, not even a conditional draft pick. Imagine how amped you’d be if you checked the news and saw this. “Seattle has just traded for a defensive tackle who had 10.5 sacks, 24 quarterback hits, and 12 tackles for a loss.” You’d be pretty stoked to pick this guy up with ten games to go. And when you saw that Seattle literally gave up nothing to get him…you may have your own personal Beastquake.

Reed is certainly the best player the Seahawks will be adding to their roster, but they’ll have more talent available soon. Guard Phil Haynes was earning raves from the coaching staff in early season workouts. Tackle Duane Brown was especially impressed with his work in the OAs. The Hawks got good news on Haynes, as he could return to practice next week.
Considering that both starting Seattle guards, Mike Iupati and D.J. Fluker have battled injuries, the return of Haynes could be a nice boost. No, I don’t expect him to step in and play like Trent Williams. For that matter, I don’t expect him to play as well as Jamarco Jones, either. But he will some much-needed depth – and again, it will cost Seattle nothing.
To be honest, both Reed and Haynes will cost the Seahawks something very precious – a roster spot. Reed will obviously be activated at the soonest possible moment, as he hasn’t been allowed to practice with the team. As for Haynes, they may wait and see how the health of their line plays out. Once he begins to practice, the Hawks have three weeks to either put him on the active roster, move him to injured reserve if he can’t go full-strength, or release him.
Don’t forget, Seattle still has a first-round draft pick ready for his chance on the defensive line as well. L.J. Collier hasn’t shown much this season, there’s no disputing that. He’s only gotten 36 snaps over two games and has just one solo tackle to show for it. He missed the entire preseason with an ankle injury, so he’s still adjusting to the game. The Seahawks obviously can’t play him nearly as much in the games that count as they would have in preseason, so it will take him a while to get up to speed.
I’m sure the Seahawks will still be making moves. We’ve discussed what it would take to get cornerback Jalen Ramsey from the Jaguars. the answer is, a lot. But he is an exceptional talent. Wide receiver A.J. Green is another likely target for Seattle. I like the receiver room for the Hawks, but Green would still be quite an upgrade. We’ll see how it all plays out, but I’m happy with the players Seattle will be getting back on their own.
