The Seahawks may have found their future offensive guard in Jamarco Jones. But this is bad news for offensive linemen Ethan Pocic.

Ethan Pocic served a purpose for a short time when he was a rookie with the Seahawks. The LSU product showed he could do a bit of everything along the offensive line and play all three positions, guard, tackle and center. To a certain degree, he could play them. But he was never relatively physically strong. Now, Jamarco Jones has probably ended Pocic’s time in Seattle.

The problem Jones has caused for Pocic is that until last week’s game against the Rams no one really knew that Jones could play guard. In fact, nobody, as far as professional football goes, knew Jones could do much of anything. But Jones not only blocked All World Aaron Donald (seriously, he even made the Pro Bowl on Saturn last year!), but he throttled Donald.

So maybe what Jones did was a one-off and he will never be good again. Or he will be excellent and be the guard no one dreamed he would be, including himself. Jones played tackle at Ohio State and was drafted to be so for Seattle. Maybe he was a fifth round pick, but the Seahawks have made their bones during the Pete Carroll-John Schneider era on fifth round draft choices (see: Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, Michael Dickson, etc.).

Pocic’s only real value to Seattle was his versatility. Now Jones, just in one game, has usurped that. Jones is a strong man and Pocic is less so. Offensive line coach Mike Solari likes strong guys. Jones, therefore, has more value than Pocic.

To be fair, I am not hating on Pocic. I want him to be good. But he hasn’t gotten better since his rookie season and that is more on him than what Seattle wants to do.

Best three Seahawks through first third of 2019. dark. Next

Sure, Pocic has now been placed, coincidentally enough, on injured reserve. This after Jones was crazy good against the Rams. Maybe Seattle thinks Pocic is OK. But more likely, they have figured out Jones has more value and could be a future starter and Pocic is no longer to play in Seattle. Hopefully, Pocic’s agent is working the phone lines and finding Pocic a new NFL home because he is short-lived with the Seahawks.
