The Seahawks defeated previously undefeated San Francisco on Monday. But Seattle may have lost a key player while doing so.

The Seahawks beat the 49ers on Monday 27-24 in overtime. It was a game that had tons of turnovers interspersed with some great plays and two good teams that should make the playoffs. Seattle is now 8-2 going into their 2019 bye week. And the 49ers have fallen to 8-1.

But during the game Seattle saw Tyler Lockett go down with a leg injury. The injury appears to be a substantial leg bruise called compartment syndrome. That means Lockett had severe pressure on a certain group of muscles. (Isn’t it strange how many illnesses and syndromes no one really knows about?)

On Monday, coach Pete Carroll said he expects Lockett to make a full and “normal” recovery. Carroll made it appear that Lockett’s bruise just needed immediate attention. Of course, 12s all remember how Lockett was injured at the end of the 2017 season in fairly dramatic fashion and there were some flashbacks to that.

After the season Lockett has started, the Seahawks cannot really be successful without him. Or at least, there is no way Seattle would fulfill whatever potential they have. Lockett may have just had three catches on four targets for 26 yards against the 49ers, but his mere presence helped other receivers make an impact. Jacob Hollister, for instance, had 8 catches for 62 yards and a touchdown.

That said, one reason Hollister may have had such a good game is that his fellow tight end, Luke Willson, was hurt. Willson hurt his hamstring and it is unknown how long he will be out. The good news is that the Seahawks should get Ed Dickson back soon. So Seattle’s tight end room, while never perfect without Will Dissly, will at least be serviceable. That may be all Russell Wilson needs.
