I fix all the Seahawks problems with my bad observations
Despite their sparkling 10-2 record, the Seahawks have had more than their share of problems. But as soon as I write about one, it magically disappears.
I cannot imagine there is a single member of the 12s that isn’t thrilled with the Seahawks record right now. I doubt that anyone but their most ardent supporters predicted a 10-2 record, or the second seed in the NFC playoff picture. Despite their record, the Hawks have had more than a few problems along the way. Now, I’m a very optimistic guy, the kind who says the glass isn’t half full, it’s just too big. Despite that, I’ve written a few articles about the team that were pretty critical.
Take the critique of the defense I wrote just a month ago. After their overtime win over the Buccaneers, I wrote the defense was in a death spiral. In hindsight, I would absolutely say the same things I did then. The defense was terrible. They did manage to lose Tampa Bay’s lead receiver about ten million times, after all.
A week before that, I had officially hopped off the Rashaad Penny bandwagon. I liked the pick a year ago. I was on board with his off-season commitment to the game. I saw the tandem of Penny and Chris Carson as one that could dominate the league. Last year, I even blamed Penny’s lack of production on the coaching staff.
But after Penny’s first six games this season, I’d seen enough. He’d only topped 3.00 yards per carry twice. I’d become convinced it wasn’t about opportunity, but about talent. After he got no carries against Baltimore, I wrote that Penny needed to start playing like a first-round pick. Just days later, I was pleading for Seattle to trade him away to find a replacement for Justin Britt.
No, I don’t know if you’ve been paying attention, but the Seahawks defense has been playing better lately. The secondary is coming around, and the entire unit is playing better. There’s no death spiral in the Emerald City. And Penny has come to life with back-to-back outstanding games, even popping up as my MVP against the Eagles.
I have to say, it’s very gratifying to know I have so much power. You’d think I’d use it to solve world hunger, educate the illiterate, or do something really useful like bring back all the Marvel series on Netflix. All of them but Iron Fist, that is. That’s a price I’m just not willing to pay. Instead, I use it to point out flaws in the Seahawks performances. Which they immediately fix. Hmmm… maybe I should complain about the price of beer at CenturyLink next.
