The secondary will be better

The Seahawks had some weird defensive statistics in 2019. The unit wasn’t good and I won’t try to sell you on the (non-) fact that they were. But even with little pass rush and not-good play late in the season by cornerback Tre Flowers, Seattle still had the ninth-best quarterback rating-allowed at 85.6. 2020 will be better.

Why? Because Seattle has two really good pieces in their secondary already with cornerback Shaquill Griffin and safety Quandre Diggs. Diggs didn’t join the team until week 6 of last year so his presence in training camp will have a positive effect on the team. And after a bad 2018, Griffin was a Pro Bowler in 2019.

There is a good chance that Flowers follows the same path in 2020 that Griffin did in 2019. Flowers will be entering his third year in the league in 2020 just as Griffin was entering his third season in 2019. Flowers needs to learn a few things, like getting his head turned around on deep passes and not losing sight of where the receiver is, but he has the physical ability to do it.

If Seattle can decide early on a nickelback, possibly Ugo Amadi, and that player can be productive, Seattle should have a good core on the backend of its defense. I also think Pete Carroll is even more hands-on early in training camp with the defensive backs. Seattle won’t be the Legion of Boom next season, but it will be much better than last year.
