Three quick moves Seahawks should have already made in 2020

2020 NFL free agency is probably about to embark, but the Seattle Seahawks need to make these three moves before that happens.

The Seahawks are going to make some roster cuts before free agency, most likely. Some of these seem to be assumed, but until they happen nothing is for certain what John Schneider might do with the following season’s roster. But prior to the beginning of the free agency period next week, Seattle should make the following moves.

Release Ed Dickson

Seriously, and maybe it is just a matter of the roster cap mojo that I do not understand, but how is Ed Dickson still a member of this Seahawks team? Pete Carroll implied last year that maybe Dickson never returned from being on the PUP list is because Dickson didn’t really want to.

If Carroll feels like you aren’t team-first and you happen to be a supporting player, you are not going to play. Dickson didn’t play. Plus, now Seattle signed Greg Olsen. And Will Dissly should be returning from being injured early in the 2019 season. Again, how is Ed Dickson still in Seattle?

Tedric Thompson still seems to be on the team

The Seahawks need good safety play to fit their defensive scheme in a successful defense. The Seahawks had a bad defense in 2019. Safety play got better once Seattle acquired Quandre Diggs. Of course, this also coincided with Tedric Thompson no longer playing. Thompson made two great interceptions in 2019 and got beat deep more times than that. He hasn’t shown himself in his three seasons to be a reliable player.

Thompson has a cap hit of $2.3 million in 2020. Releasing him would make a bit more room for Seattle to get another player of more value.

Release Justin Britt

This is a tougher one. It isn’t like Britt has been bad at center for the Seahawks. He’s been pretty good. However, his cap hit in 2020 is $11.4 million and the difference between backup Joey Hunt and him is not that great. Seattle needs edge rushers, a right tackle and interior defensive linemen. One way of making more cap space to get those players is to release Britt, re-sign Hunt (who is a restricted free agent) and draft Cesar Ruiz.
