According to CBS Sports, the Seahawks will take receiver Tee Higgins in the first round of the 2020 draft. Is this the right move for Seattle?

The Seahawks desperately need pass rushers as they have nearly completely failed to sign any this offseason. Sure, they signed Bruce Irvin, but how good will he be in Seattle’s system that seems to restrict creativity.

But according to CBS Sports’ Josh Edwards, Seattle won’t go edge rusher with their first pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Instead, they will choose receiver Tee Higgins from Clemson.

Higgins, the Oak Ridge, TN native, might become a great NFL player. And maybe he will even do so with the Seahawks, but this draft is full of potentially very good wideouts. Seattle has bigger needs than receiver, so choosing Higgins might not be the smart way to go.

Edwards, though, thinks teams go a bit crazy picking receivers in the first round. Higgins, according to Edwards, would be the 27th pick in the draft but the sixth receiver taken. The 6’4″ and 215 pound Higgins is madly skilled with great athletic ability. He will be fun to watch. Per Edwards

"Josh Gordon has not worked out. D.K. Metcalf looks like a solid player, but Seattle can really open up that offense with Higgins. Higgins and Metcalf drawing coverage with Tyler Lockett working underneath is pretty potent."

But Higgins should not be fun to watch for 12s. The reason is that the Seahawks choosing a receiver first while only signing Irvin and re-signing Jarran Reed (which doesn’t count towards adding value because he was already on the team) to help with the pass rush would mean Seattle has gone all-in on the offense and that is how they want to win games.

Seattle’s offense is not designed to dominate games; The offense is designed, in theory, to eat clock and run as much as pass. Edwards says Josh Gordon “has not worked out,” but there is still a chance Seattle gets Gordon back. Plus, the Seahawks signed Phillip Dorsett to be their slot receiver. Seattle does not need another receiver, even a potentially great one like Higgins.

The Seahawks need pass rushers, plural. They need to re-sign Jadeveon Clowney and another one as well, possibly Everson Griffen. But unless Higgins can be a receiver and also play defensive end, then he isn’t the pick Seattle should make in round one.
