Seahawks should trade for defensive end Takkarist McKinley
By Geoff Shull
This really is a very low risk, very high reward proposition for the Seahawks.
Seattle would be wholeheartedly committing to a defensive end by committee approach. There would not be any one player I would bet to be a full-time starter. The rotation of Rasheem Green, Bruce Irvin, Benson Meyowa, Darrell Taylor, Takkarist McKinley and LJ Collier has a lot of unflashy potential though.
They would be trading a talented wide receiver out of what is already a crowded group. This could also open up a little cash to go after someone like Josh Gordon, or Antonio Brown.
The Seahawks would be banking on McKinley fulfilling his potential in a familiar, yet different defensive scheme. If he flames out, the team can cut him leaving $0 in dead cap. No harm, no foul.
If he succeeds, the team can likely extend him for a number far below that of Frank Clark or Jadeveon Clowney’s asking price. Or, they could simply play the comp game and let him leave and recoup a 3rd-4th round pick a year later.
McKinley’s market value right now is around $5-$8 million per year. If he has a successful campaign, I can see him getting upwards of $13-$15 million per year. Absolutely in the wheelhouse for Seattle to be comfortable paying a defensive end.
These are the buy low signing/trades that the team has built itself around. Players like Marshawn Lynch, Justin Coleman, Quandre Diggs and Quinton Dunbar had fallen out of favor and Seattle traded pennies on the dollar to acquire them. Perhaps, McKinley is the next link in the chain.
