Seahawks QB Russell Wilson led the NFC in big-time throws

Russell Wilson throws a pretty deep ball. His deep pass isn’t just pretty, it is deadly accurate and one of Wilson’s best tools. In fact, he was one of the best in the NFL in throwing big-time throws last year.

Do you know what is the most humorous thing about this list? All other quarterbacks on here were on pass-first offenses. The closest player to Wilson in terms of overall throwing attempts was Aaron Rodgers, he still had nearly 60 more passing attempts. The other 3 all had nearly 100 more attempts than Wilson.

Wilson simply did, more with less. When he was given the opportunity to let the ball fly, he executed to perfection. In fact, PFF has him as the highest-graded quarterback in the NFL on throws beyond 20 yards.

On plays thrown 30 yards or more, he completed the pass 51.9% of the time. This was the highest rate in the NFL, per Brady Henderson. His touchdown to interception ratio on those throws was a perfect 9 to 0. His ball placement is so perfect that he either hits his man in stride or overthrows it enough that the defensive back doesn’t stand a chance.

Logically, when a quarterback plays semi-aggressive football, as Wilson does, there is a fairly substantial margin of error for interceptions. However, the rule of logic simply doesn’t apply to Wilson. In fact, he actually had the second-lowest interception rate in the NFL last year at just .97%. Wilson knows how to balance risk and reward, better than just about anyone despite playing aggressively.
