Defense

Well, goodness. The Seahawks defense got a lot better on Saturday after Seattle traded for safety Jamal Adams. But will defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr. be good enough to guide this group to success? He has never had a defense rank in the top-15 of the league.

Defensive line

Starters: Jadeveon Clowney, Jarran Reed, Poona Ford, Rasheem Green

Backups: Benson Mayowa, Darrell Taylor, Alton Robinson, Bryan Mone and L.J Collier

I realize that Clowney is not currently on the team but I think the Seahawks find a way to re-sign him. With him back in the fold, and with Seattle drafting edge rushers Taylor and Robinson, I think the pass rush is better in 2020 with 38 sacks.

Defensive tackle is thin, though. After Reed and Ford, and maybe Mone, there is no proven quality. Possibly Collier could help out there but he needs to show he can do anything productive at this point.

Linebackers

Starters: Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright

Backups: Jordyn Brooks, Cody Barton, Bruce Irvin and Shaquem Griffin

My hope is that the Seahawks disuse their 4-3-4 base from 2019 and go back to a 4-2-5. Last year’s base didn’t work and now Seattle is loaded in the secondary and needs those players involved more. That said, Seattle has the best linebacker group in the NFL. If Brooks is anywhere close to his potential in his first season, opposing teams should shudder.

Griffin and Irvin should help put heat on opposing quarterbacks and by 2022, Barton and Brooks could be the starters.

Defensive backs

Cornerback starters: Quinton Dunbar, Shaquill Griffin and Ugo Amadi (slot)

Backups: Tre Flowers and Neiko Thorpe

Safety starters: Quandre Diggs and Jamal Adams

Backups: Marquise Blair and Chris Miller

Assuming Dunbar doesn’t get suspended for a potential offseason infraction, he will start instead of Flowers. But even if Flowers starts, Seattle should still be good. Amadi will lock down the slot spot for a few seasons. The safety tandem might be the best in the NFL with Diggs filling the Earl Thomas role and Adams the Kam Chancellor role.

Blair needs to play more in 2020 even with Diggs and Adams in front of him. And Miller makes the team over Lano Hill because Hill isn’t good.

Adams had 6.5 sacks last year. 6.5.
