Seahawks roster bubble player one: Shaquem Griffin – Edge

Shaquem Griffin has been a truly inspirational story for us all. He has battled for everything he has earned to date. I have nothing but respect for the man and the player.

However, he is going to face an uphill battle to make the roster. Seattle has a lot of linebackers on the roster. The Seahawks felt that the edge position was weak enough internally that they went out and signed Bruce Irvin to fill it.

If that were all, I could see Seattle giving Griffin a little more grace. However, Seattle used its first selection in the draft this year on a do it all linebacker in Jordyn Brooks. This is just one year removed from Seattle spending third and fifth selections on Cody Barton and Ben Burr-Kirven.

The pure depth at the linebacker position is incredible. This is especially true considering Seattle is likely to move back toward a dime/nickel package. This would limit the linebackers to just two on the field during these subsets.

For Shaquem Griffin to make the roster, he is going to not only need a phenomenal pre-season but a true opportunity to showcase his best talent; rushing the passer. The Seahawks have been incredibly slow getting Griffin in on pass-rushing downs.

I am unsure why. To me, this is easily his best situation to be successful in. Put that speed and athleticism to work. I can only speculate. It could be due to his smaller size and medical condition. Or it could be issues learning the playbook, understanding schemes, etc.

Regardless, if he is going to make the roster, he will need to be nearly perfect during training camp. The amount of quality players vying for just a few roster spots leaves no room for error.
