Re-ranking Seahawks featured on the NFL Top 100 list
By Lee Vowell
The NFL had their annual fun of ranking the top 100 players in the league. This is where the Seahawks had players ranked and where they should have ranked.
The Seahawks are a talented team. Seattle landed six current players on the NFL’s list of the top 100 and one who played for Seattle in 2019. Did the NFL get the ranking correct for the Seahawks involved?
Chris Carson
Original rank: 96
Re-rank: 51
I don’t want to say Chris Carson is the 51st best player in the NFL, but Todd Gurley is the 51st ranked player on the NFL’s list and at this point, Carson is a better player than Gurley. Gurley is only a year older than Carson but seems seven years older physically. Gurley is diminishing and Carson is likely ascending.
If Gurley is number 51 on the list, Carson deserves to take his place. Carson outgained Gurley in terms of yards per scrimmage in 2019 (1,496 to 1,064) and yards per touches (4.7 to 4.2). That Gurley had more touchdowns than Carson is more because of the Rams offensive structure than Seattle’s.
D.K. Metcalf
Original rank: 81
Re-rank: 81
I am going to agree with Metcalf being 81 for now as he was just a rookie receiver in 2020. But if he isn’t in the top 50 players for 2021 then something has gone wrong. Metcalf will be a great player for Seattle for years to come.
Tyler Lockett
Original rank: 65
Re-rank: 64
Jarvis Landry of the Browns somehow ranks ahead of Lockett on the NFL’s list as Landry is number 61. This is complete crap. Landry has played six seasons to Lockett’s five. Over that time, Landry has 470 more targets than Lockett but only 5 more touchdowns (32 to 27). Landry averages almost 3 fewer years a catch (13.9 for Lockett to 11 for Landry). Landry catches 65.8 percent of his targets compared to Lockett’s 71.5. There is nothing about Jarvis Landry that is better than Tyler Lockett physically.
Jadeveon Clowney
Original rank: 41
Re-rank: Sadness
Jadeveon Clowney is a beastly beast that unfortunately will likely be beasting for another team other than the Seahawks in 2020. Seattle appears to have moved on from trying to re-sign Clowney, who is good against the pass and even better against the run.
Jamal Adams
Original rank: 27
Re-rank: 26
When one starts getting this high in the rankings, it is difficult to nitpick. Still, Jamal Adams is such a great fit in the Seahawks defense and can do so many things to help Seattle win – linebacker, safety, punter (maybe?) – that I moved him ahead of Dalvin Cook, the Vikings running back at number 21.
Minnesota can win about the same as many games without Cook. Adams will help the Seahawks win more games since he is now on the team.
Bobby Wagner
Original rank: 13
Re-rank: 12
Bobby Wagner, future Hall of Famer and leader of the Seahawks defense, is more important to his unit in 2020 than Drew Brees is to the Saints offense. Seattle has no replacement for Wagner. New Orleans has Jameis Winston as Brees’ backup. The Saints have a very good offensive coach. Seattle has Ken Norton, Jr. coaching the defense.
Wagner should be 12th.
Russell Wilson
Original rank: 2
Re-rank: 2
Hey! Maybe Russell Wilson will actually get an MVP vote this year? The NFL had Lamar Jackson at number one on their list. I would like to say Wilson should be number one. The real number one might need to be Patrick Mahomes and not Jackson.
The most important thing is the Seahawks quarterback is better than your favorite team’s quarterback and Wilson is likely the reason Seattle beats your favorite team unless you are a Seahawks fan. Wilson is number one for the Seahawks and if you are a 12 then that is all that matters.
