Countdown to Seahawks 2020: Best Seattle player to wear No. 24
By Lee Vowell
Who is the best number 24 in Seattle Seahawks history?
Rejoice, 12s! There are just a bit over three weeks left before the Seattle Seahawks start their 2020 season! While 12s won’t be able to show up at CenturyLink Field to watch their favorite team in at least the first part of the season, there will still be football watch and Seahawks wins to cheer on.
There are exactly 24 days left before the Seahawks play the Falcons in Atlanta on September 13th. So in honor of the number 24, who is the best player to ever wear that jersey number for Seattle?
Marshawn Lynch
Maybe this is obvious, but it’s a little closer than it may appear (more on the honorable mention player in a bit). But Marshawn Lynch is the best player to wear number 24 for the Seahawks based on production and importance.
During the 2010s, Lynch, possibly more than even Russell Wilson, set the offensive tone for the Seattle offense. Coach Pete Carroll likes to run the ball a lot and I can even imagine a Seahawks offense in the past decade without Lynch who ran and ran with aggression.
Seattle, of course, had one of the best defenses ever from 2012 to 2015 and the defense imposed its will on other teams. But Lynch mimicked this on offense. His powerful runs against the Saints in the Wild Card win in 2011 and against the Cardinals in 2014 are special moments.
Lynch played a bit more time with the Seahawks in 2019 but is now likely done with football. If so, he will have finished fourth in Seahawks in rushing yards (6,381), second in touchdowns (58) and third in yards rushing per game (76.9). Plus, a Super Bowl ring.
Honorable mention
Marshawn Lynch is clearly the best number 24 for Seattle, but cornerback Shawn Springs was pretty good too from 1997 to 2003. In seven years with Seattle, Springs had 20 interceptions and five fumble recoveries and made the Pro Bowl in 1998 when he had 7 interceptions.
