Seahawks are set at backup quarterback with Geno Smith
By Lee Vowell
Geno Smith will backup Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, guaranteed.
The Seahawks brought in former Vikings backup quarterback Kyle Sloter for a look this past week. Sloter has played for several teams in his short career. The Seahawks aren’t worried about who will back up the great Russell Wilson in 2020, though. That player is named Geno Smith.
In bringing in Sloter, while also entertaining Danny Etling and undrafted rookie Anthony Gordon, it may appear that Seattle is looking to really find the guy who comes into games if Wilson – shuddering just writing this by the way – gets injured. Do not worry, 12s. The Seahawks are not thinking Gordon, Etling or Sloter will actually make the active roster.
Geno Smith is an ideal backup to Russell Wilson. No, he isn’t nearly as good as Wilson (few humans who have ever played quarterback are), but he can operate the Seahawks offense and possibly even help win a few games. Smith has experience starting in the NFL and looks pretty good in training camp.
Smith throws a nice deep ball, which the Seahawks rely on as part of their offense. If he had to come into a game, with receivers like Tyler Lockett, D.K. Metcalf and Paul Richardson (probably), then Smith could lead the team to points. Sloter, Etling and Gordon are less likely to do so.
Seahawks practice squad
With NFL teams able to have 16 players on their practice squads for 2020, Seattle is simply looking to fill that squad out. Definitely the Seahawks will have at least one, and possibly two, quarterbacks on the unit. This makes sense. Worst-case scenario, Wilson gets hurt. But even worse than worst would be if Seattle had to bring in Sloter, Etling or Gordon.
Geno Smith is going to be the Seahawks backup at quarterback in 2020. And heck, probably even 2021 and beyond if he wants and is willing to sign for the right money. All the rest of the quarterbacks the Seahawks entertain in training camp are practice squad fillers and nothing else.
