2. San Francisco 49ers

Looking at the depth charts and play productions, the Rams and 49er’s secondaries are nearly tied. I put the 49ers ahead of the Rams because of how solid the starters are. Jalen Ramsey still needs to adjust to being in Los Angeles’ defensive system but the 49ers should have their starters locked down. The 49ers defense also allowed only 281.8 yards per game in 2019, although, how much of that is attributed to the secondary considering their scary defensive line?

The 49ers defense ranked 2nd total defense DVOA at -19.7% and ranked 2nd in pass defense DVOA at -26.3%. They allowed a 61.3% completion percentage and 23 passing touchdowns.

The 49ers obviously have some very good players in their secondary, especially former Seahawks corner, Richard Sherman. Despite turning 32 earlier this year and coming off an Achilles injury in 2017, Sherman disproved the low expectations for him with his performance in San Francisco.

Jimmie Ward has also bloomed into an exceptional player and becoming one of the top safeties in the league. He started 13 games in 2019 and ended with 65 tackles. He had zero interceptions but allowed a completion percentage of only 58.1% and 9.6 yards per completion, down from 17.8 the year before.

The 49ers have a lot of depth in their secondary and it seems like there is a lot for fans to get excited about. A handful of backups are already impressing in training camp, less than two weeks before the start of the regular season. It will be quite the compelling sight to see how the 49ers secondary fares in 2020 following their Super Bowl LIV loss.
