Seahawks make good move and activate Shaquem Griffin for week three
By Lee Vowell
Shaquem Griffin is active for the Seahawks in week three versus the Cowboys.
At the end of the 2019 season, the Seahawks started using Shaquem Griffin in blitz packages and Griffin began to produce results. From week 11 through the two games in the playoffs, Griffin had four quarterback hits and a sack. But Seattle added Bruce Irvin to the team this offseason and drafted Jordyn Brooks and Griffin did not have a spot on the Seahawks.
No team claimed Griffin when he was released and Seattle was able to sign Griffin to the practice squad.
Irvin, of course, was injured in week two and will miss the rest of the season. Seattle also placed defensive end Rasheem Green on IR meaning he will miss at least three games. This opens up the opportunity for Griffin to play and the Seahawks have promoted Griffin to the active roster for week three.
I expect Griffin will supply immediate results. He is a good player but he is a situational one. This is the reason Griffin will never be a full-time starter in the NFL; He is too one dimensional. But given the opportunity to showcase that dimension, which is using his incredible speed to chase down opposing quarterbacks, Griffin can produce.
What else Shaquem Griffin offers
If Griffin had played under a different and more creative defensive coordinator other than Ken Norton, Jr. during his short career, I think he probably would have had 5 sack seasons. Instead, Griffin has been under-utilized. But Griffin also does something else well which is cover on special teams.
There is a good chance that Neiko Thorpe will miss week three with an injury. Griffin is the kind of player with his speed to help offset that loss. Shaquem Griffin will play a big role for the Seahawks in week three. He won’t be Seattle’s best player on the field, but he will somehow make an impact and you can count on that.
