Alex Collins

Alex Collins has been the Seahawks best running back this preseason. This means he has played better and looked more athletic than Rashaad Penny and every other Seattle back not named Chris Carson. But Carson hasn’t played this preseason in order to keep him healthy and Collins was given a chance at showing what he could do.

Against the Chargers, Collins had 89 total yards and this led the team. Collins also led the team in receptions (7), receiving yards (52) and rushing yards (37). While doing this Collins several times shifted away from would-be tacklers and lept over them a couple of times too. Collins looked like he could be a number-two back. Rashaad Penny did not.

There is a drop-off between Carson and Collins but there would be a drop-off between Carson and most other running backs in the NFL. He is very good. Collins, though, not only runs with fluidity and speed but has good hands out of the backfield. This is only going to help him earn a spot on the roster.

But not only should Collins definitely make the team, I think at this point he needs to be the second back in the rotation after Carson. Penny needs to be third. If Penny gets into the regular season and performs better, great. But Collins has shown more than Penny to this point in 2021.
