The Seahawks prevailed in the 2021 season opener, and I’m sure that came as a surprise to no one among the 12s. What may have surprised you were the overachiever and underachiever of the game. Let’s get to it.

I truly struggled with this one. Not the actual individuals, mind you, but the order in which to discuss them. In the end, it made more sense to end on a positive note. That of course means I’m about to dump all over one of our beloved Seahawks.

Please keep in mind that if someone underachieves, that doesn’t mean they played poorly. They may simply have an incredibly high standard of play. And of course, this week’s underachiever can very be next week’s hero.

Who stepped up (or down) for Seahawks in week one

Okay, enough of that, I can’t delay it any longer. For week one, the underachiever was Carson Wentz. I mean, he played alright, but he has never beaten the Seahawks. At this point, when he sees Seattle on the schedule, he should just call in sick. I mean – ah. Our fearless leader, Lee Vowell, just informed me that I should come up with a Seahawks player here. My bad.

Fine. My Seahawks underachiever for week one is Russell Wilson. Yeah, yeah, four touchdown passes, no picks, a passer rating of 152.3. Big deal. DangeRuss only threw one touchdown in the second half and missed a perfect passer rating by six full points. Clearly, my tongue is so firmly in my cheek it practically punched through like a tiny Xenomorph.

Wilson was fantastic, obviously. Yes, there were a couple of blown coverages, but the defense more than made up for that with big hits and stop after critical stop. I truly can’t say that anyone underachieved in this game. I mean, other than that slacker Wentz.

Thank God that’s done. Now for the good part. My overachiever for the big Seahawks win is professional man-beast Rasheem Green. You may recall that Mr. Vowell had Green as one of his three breakout players for 2021. Green was in for 70 percent of the Seahawks plays but was easily the star on defense. Make no mistake, this was a total team effort, but this is about the overachiever.

I’d say getting two of the Hawks ten pressures, one of the five tackles for a loss, and one of the three sacks while sitting out almost a third of the snaps is overachieving. Oh, did I mention Green also had two of the Seahawks three pass defenses? The fourth-year player was an absolute monster.

Next. Seahawks win in dominating performance. dark

Honorable mention to Benson Mayowa, who also had a sack and two QB hits, but doubled Green’s tackles for a loss. But he didn’t break up any passes. Did LB Jordyn Brooks overachieve with his 11 tackles? Not really; I expect that’s just his base performance. Yeah, he’s gonna be that good. Right, Carson?
