The biggest mistake Seahawks could make in the 2022 NFL Draft
By Lee Vowell
What would be the worst mistake the Seattle Seahawks could make in the 2022 NFL draft? Maybe something that involves a player on the current roster.
The Seahawks have a lot of needs in the draft. Maybe some 12s dispute this. Some can point to the safety tandem being really good for Seattle and the receivers are too. This is true. But there are question marks even there. Can Jamal Adams stay healthy and cover people well? Will Seattle’s new quarterback be able to get the ball deep to Tyler Lockett or DK Metcalf?
Seattle currently has the number 9 pick overall along with picks 40 and 41. These picks are high enough in themselves for Seattle to get some impact players to help with 2022 success. The Seahawks could trade down from pick 9 and get a later first-round choice and make pick up another second. That would be OK.
But what wouldn’t be OK if for Seattle to overdo it. Maybe the Seahawks do trade down and end up getting pick number 12, for instance, from the Vikings as well as pick number 46. But if Seattle on the day of the first round decides to trade DK Metcalf to the Jets for pick number 10 overall as well as pick number 35 and maybe a pick in the 2023 draft would be a mistake.
Seahawks need to avoid making one massive mistake during the 2022 NFL draft
Metcalf is an extremely talented 24-year-old receiver that every team wants to get on their roster. Well, Seattle already has them on theirs. Metcalf should be a very good wideout in the NFL for at least six or seven more years. Even after that, he should be productive. Instead of trading Metcalf, Seattle needs to extend him for a long time. He will be expensive but he should be worth it.
The emotion that John Schneider and Pete Carroll need to fight on April 28th is greed. Sticking at pick 9 is fine. Trading back a bit is probably good too. But trading DK Metcalf to get extra picks is bad.
