The Seattle Seahawks have the 9th overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft but 12s all know they are going to trade down. When they do, they should pick Trevor Penning.

So why did I headline this article with the word “steal” in it as Penning is expected to be taken in the first round? I used the word because there are a bunch of teams hoping Penning is still around at pick 15 or after.

Seattle is likely going to trade back, and pick up more choices but I think Seattle probably trades back to pick 12 or 15 and when they do, Penning should be there.

Trevor Penning would be a great pick for the Seahawks in the 2022 NFL draft

Penning has elite size, has a mean streak and is easily quick enough to be a very good left tackle in the NFL. But he is strong enough to be a very good right tackle in the league. He is 6’7″ and 330 pounds with 34 1/4″ arms (which are very long and perfect for a left tackle) and he still ran a 4.89 40-yard dash at the NFL combine.

The one thing that could keep from Penning starting right away, either at right tackle or left, is that he played at a smaller school (Northern Iowa) and he will need time to learn better technique while also getting used to the speed of NFL edge rushers. Penning also plays with such ferocity that he will need to harness that at the pro level.

Due to learning better technique with the Seahawks, this is what I think might happen. Seattle trades with the Eagles to get pick 15 and a second-round pick while Philadelphia moves up to pick 9. At pick 15, Seattle chooses Penning.

This offseason the Seahawks will re-sign Duane Brown to a one-year deal and Penning will start on the right side. In 2023, Penning flips to replace Brown at left tackle and Seattle takes a right tackle in the 2023 NFL draft.

Penning’s potential is simply too much to pass on. He needs to work on hand strength, adapting the speed of the NFL, and learn how to be an NFL tackle but he has an immense amount of raw skill that will allow of that to happen.
