Seahawks position battle 3: Running back #3

Let’s assume, safely so, that Chris Carson isn’t ever coming back from the neck injury he suffered in 2021. That means Rashaad Penny and Ken Walker will get most of the carries this season. But Seattle also doesn’t have the best recent record of having running backs stay healthy. Whoever the third back is in the rotation is going to get a bunch of snaps.

The backs currently on the roster trying to vie for the third spot include Travis Homer and DeeJay Dallas. Homer is entering his fourth year in the league and has 64 career carries but some of those (the long runs) are from fake punts. Homer is great on special teams. Dallas is going into his third season and has 67 career carries but only averages 3.7 yards a rush.

Josh Johnson and Darwin Thompson round out the running back room but neither is expected to carry much of the load. Plus, if they do, that means something bad has likely happened.

This might mean Seattle looks to pick up a free agent running back before the season and there are several who might be worthy of signing. Adrian Peterson, while he wouldn’t be able to carry the team for many games, did have a positive influence on Penny last year and could spell another RB that is getting a bunch of carries.

Former Seahawks Carlos Hyde and Alex Collins could also merit a look, if needed. Both are free agents.
