Seahawks position battle 4: Quarterback

This is the most obvious and crucial training camp battle for Seattle, right? And whoever wins this competition might determine the success or failure not only of 2022 but for years ahead. For instance, if Geno Smith becomes QB1, Seattle still isn’t likely to see him as a long-term answer for the position.

But if Drew Lock is QB1 and then plays well for most of the season, the Seahawks might re-think the need for a first-round quarterback in the 2023 draft. That is almost a best-case scenario, of course, because if Lock is good he is also still young enough to be good for 10 years. This would also free up a draft pick for another position of need.

Perhaps the most realistic outcome is that there isn’t a huge difference between what Smith and Lock do in training camp and the position battle continues a bit into the season. This clearly isn’t ideal but if this happens then neither Smith nor Lock is probably going to start in 2023. Seattle will draft a quarterback early.

Another possibility for this position is that the Seahawks acquire another quarterback to add to the mix. This would probably be current Browns QB Baker Mayfield. Seattle might simply be waiting for Cleveland to release Mayfield and then sign him. If that’s the case, Mayfield would likely be QB1 in Week 1.
