Mistake 2: Seahawks not re-signing cornerback D.J. Reed

D.J. Reed has been Seattle’s best corner for the last two years. He is still young (only 25 years old) and has many years left to play at a high level. But those seasons won’t be with the Seahawks. Reed signed with the New York Jets this offseason for three years and up to $33 million. He deserved to get paid and he did. Seattle needed Reed to stay with the team and Reed left.

But Reed also didn’t have nice things to say about Seattle’s contract offer to him before he did sign with the Jets. This implies that the Seahawks weren’t even going to truly entertain bringing Reed back. Based on the fact that Reed was the eighth-best cornerback in the NFL in 2021, per Pro Football Focus, not having Reed return seems like a mistake.

In the second half of last season, Reed and Sidney Jones formed pretty good bookends at outside corner for Seattle. CB was a concern coming into 2021 but by the end of the year, there were a lot greater issues for Seattle than CB. Now, because Reed is gone, CB is an issue again heading into 2022.

Seattle is taking a risk by thinking that either Tre Brown or Coby Bryant can be good. Brown only played in a handful of games in his rookie year of 2021 and Bryant is a rookie. Maybe those guys do work out but Seattle could have kept Reed and then thought of replacing Jones after 2022. But any chance of that left with Seattle’s low ball offer to Reed this offseason.
