NBC Sports Edge posted a list of best general managers in the NFL recently and Seahawks GM John Schneider ranks in the bottom third of the league.

Bottom third? Really. It’s crazy what social media and instant news have done to the world. Everything has to be now now now. Sure, the Seahawks traded Russell Wilson this offseason so maybe the team will be worse in 2022 than in the last 10 years.

But the way Seattle drafted, and John Schneider is clearly one of the two most important voices in the Seahawks organization when it comes to drafts (along with Pete Carroll), in 2022 appears to have been very good and the team could be better in 2023. Much better.

NBC Sports Edge seems to hate Seahawks general manager John Schneider

But why does NBC Sports Edge say that Schneider is one of the worst GMs in the league – because that is what they are saying – is this:

"The Seahawks’ front office has made two signature moves the past three years: Trading two first-round picks for a safety and acquiring two first-round picks for the quarterback who oversaw at least one playoff victory six of his 10 years in town. I’m not sure which, but that seems like a cardinal sin. It’s definitely a team-building sin. The one thing you do not do in the modern NFL is give away a franchise quarterback."

Well, first of all, Russell Wilson hasn’t won a postseason game since 2019. He hasn’t won more than two playoffs games in a season since 2014. So let’s not get too high on the “we love Russ but hate Schneider” theory. If Schneider built the team then the quarterback should have led the team to extended success and Wilson didn’t do that. Not without an elite defense anyway.

Also, compared to other GMs, there are these things. Since 2010, the Seahawks have had the sixth-most wins in the NFL. They have made the playoffs the third-most times. They have the third-most playoff victories. Seattle, while they didn’t win a Super Bowl without Russell Wilson, did win a playoff game without Wilson.

My point is that there is no logical way that Schneider is the 22nd (out of 27, by the way, because the ranking doesn’t include new general managers) “best” GM in the NFL. He is top ten. So maybe whoever ranked the GMs at NBC Sports Edge should do a little research past this last three years ago.
