Seahawks sign vets and rookies to practice squad

Let’s break down each of these players, shall we? J.J. Arcega-Whiteside joined the team via trade with the Eagles for Ugo Amadi (who has since been traded to the Titans). Does A-dub have some upside? Sure he does, that’s why he’s on the practice squad. Is he expected to play a big role for the Seahawks this season? Ummm… there’s a reason he’s on the practice squad.

Tackle Greg Eiland rebounded from a rough initial preseason game performance (PFF grade 50.8) to the team’s best grade for an offensive lineman in game two, 72.3. The 6’8″, 321-pounder can play guard or tackle and is likely to be activated at some point this season.

Wide receiver Cade Johnson spent time on the Seahawks practice squad last season, so he’s familiar with the role. Hopefully, he shows better skills than he did with his muffed punt return versus the Bears in that hellacious preseason game. The fact he made the squad shows that the coaches still have some faith in him.

Linebacker Vi Jones was added to the practice squad as an undrafted free agent. 6’2″, 225, Jones played inside and outside for Seattle, amassing 13 tackles and a sack. The NC State product has never been shy about playing his way onto the field before, so don’t be surprised to see him on Lumen Field several times this season.

Tyler Mabry was part of the somewhat lackluster Seahawks tight end group this preseason. He previously spent all of the 2020 season on the Hawks practice squad and moved between the practice squad and the active roster last season. He got into six games, seeing almost all his action on special teams. Expect more of the same this season.
