Three silly predictions for Seahawks versus Jets Week 17
By Lee Vowell
The Seahawks and Jets play in Week 17. Both teams are 7-8 and both still have a chance at the postseason. Here are three things that might happen.
Week 17’s matchup between Seattle and New York would be intriguing if neither team had a chance at the playoffs. One of the biggest reasons for this is that both teams have outperformed preseason expectations while at the same time looking as if they could be really good in a couple of years. The Seahawks versus the Jets could be a Super Bowl matchup in 2025.
But let’s get through this week first. Whichever team loses is basically done this year. Lots of things would have to go right otherwise for the losing team to still have a chance to make the postseason. Plus, while both teams are better than expected, is either one really good enough to do much in the playoffs?
But this is a pro-Seahawks site, of course, and we not only want them to win their final two games of the 2022 season, make the playoffs and then win every game once there. Seattle the Super Bowl champion this season? Likely not, but there is still a chance currently. But here are three other things unlikely to happen and what I am still guessing happens on Sunday.
Prediction 1: The Seahawks score on a fake field goal
Is it just me or does it seem like teams who are struggling to be mediocre take fewer chances? You might fondly remember when the Seahawks pulled off a fake field goal against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship game of the 2014 season. The score was 16-0 and Seattle was being dominated. But what did that excellent Seattle team do? A fake field goal and that helped spark a come-from-behind victory.
Seattle will pull off another fake field in Week 17 when punter Michael Dickson throws a pass to tight end Colby Parkinson who picks up a first down, breaks a tackle, and runs in from 28 yards for a touchdown. Will this spark a Seattle win too? You bet.
Prediction 2: Each quarterback throws a pick-six
Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith has been good for most of the season but has had more turnovers lately. He probably should have even more interceptions than he currently has credit for, which is 9. 5 of those picks have come in the last five games, however.
Jets quarterback Mike White has played in seven career games and has thrown for 8 touchdowns but also 10 interceptions. In other words, White throwing a pick would not be shocking. In Week 17, Smith will throw a pick-six to Jets corner Sauce Gardner and White will throw a pick-six to Seattle CB Tariq Woolen.
Prediction 3: Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker runs for 175 yards
The Jets have an excellent defense and play the pass only slightly better than they do the run. That last part isn’t meant as a slight because New York plays both the run and the pass really well. New York has allowed one running back to go over 100 rushing yards in 2022, so why do I think Walker will go well beyond that?
To be fair, no idea. The Seahawks, up until last week, haven’t been running the ball well recently. Walker is a little dinged up and Seattle could be without right tackle Abe Lucas. It’s just a hunch, but I am guessing Walker has a huge game for Seattle against the Jets.
