Adam Schefter confirms what Seahawks fans already knew about DK Metcalf
By Lee Vowell
The Seattle Seahawks need DK Metcalf. If anything has been proven over the last two games, both of which were Seattle losses, it is that Metcalf is extremely important to the offense. Not just this season but well beyond. Still, as Tuesday is not only election day but also the NFL trade deadline, many wondered if Metcalf might be traded.
The truth is that Metcalf is probably one of the few Seattle players who would bring much back in a trade. Seattle's season looks relatively doomed at this point, so rebuilding should be a priority. If moving Metcalf means the Seahawks could add another first-round choice in 2025, then it was something for general manager John Schneider to possibly consider.
The word "possibly" is important there. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Schneider is not even entertaining a potential move of Metcalf. He tweeted on Tuesday, "Despite any speculation, the Seahawks will not be trading wide receiver D.K. Metcalf by today’s 4 pm (ET) trade deadline."
ESPN's Adam Schefter says Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf is not being traded
If Schefter is right, and he most likely is, then that news should be good for 12s. Sure, many might not like his mercurial nature on the field, but that seems to come with the elite wide receiver territory. Some might see the group as divas, but having so much confidence that it borders on arrogance is almost a must. Metcalf fits that group.
He is also Seattle's best receiver. No matter what 12s saw from Jaxon Smith-Njigba (seven catches, 180 yards receiving, and two touchdowns) in Week 9, Metcalf is the alpha of the Seattle wide receiver room. He should be extended past when his current deal ends (2025) and, along with JSN, form one of the best receiving duos in the league for the next five years.
Even though Metcalf has missed two straight games, and after JSN's explosive game against the Rams, Metcalf is tied for the team-lead in receiving yards, has as many receiving touchdowns as any other player, and leads the team in yards per catch by a wide margin. As opposed to Smith-Njigba and Tyler Lockett, opponents are forced to game-plan for Metcalf's ability to get consistently open deep.
The Seahawks focus on Metcalf should not be whether to trade him, but how much cap room needs to be allotted to keep him in Seattle for a long time. Based on Schefter's tweet, that is likely John Schneider's approach to the receiver.
