DK Metcalf's warning to the NFL still needs to be proven by the Seahawks

DK Metcalf has high hopes for the Seattle Seahawks but the team might not be ready to match Metcalf's recent comments.

There were some hopes when the Seattle Seahawks overhauled their coaching staff this offseason that some negative trends would immediately change. We are only two games into the 2024 season so the changes might still be forthcoming and will take time, but 12s have not seen evidence of a change from some recent norms yet.

Some of those trends included run defense. Seattle was awful against the New England Patriots, especially in the second half. Another is the use of the tight end group by the offense. This is where DK Metcalf comes in.

Metcalf believes in his teammates and believes Seattle has a chance to be special offensively. Some of what he is basing that on has not come to fruition yet. Seattle didn't run the ball well in Week 2, for instance, and seems incapable without a healthy Kenneth Walker III. Also, tight end Noah Fant has been invisible.

DK Metcalf sends warning that Seahawks could be a "ticking time bomb"

Fant has good speed for his size and should be a weapon, but he still is not getting many targets. To be fair, he did have a drop in Week 2 that might have turned into a touchdown had he held on to the ball. But he also has not scored a touchdown in 22 games.

For the Seahawks to truly be an elite offense, they must have a running game and Fant must be good. The wide receiver targets have been inconsistent through two games, but with three excellent receivers that might continue to be the case. There are only so many receiver targets, after all.

Metcalf told the media during a press conference after practice ahead of the Seahawks' Week 3 game versus the Miami Dolphins, "...you got (Tyler Lockett), me, (Jaxon Smith-Njigba), and you still haven’t seen Noah. You saw Ken Week 1. Zach Charbonnet still has to break out. So, I think it’s just a ticking time bomb for all of our stars on offense to hit their stride."

That all could be the case, but there are also a lot of ifs in that statement. 12s have not seen Charbonnet break out at all and Fant has been underused since he came to Seattle before the 2022 season. Walker needs to get healthy and stay that way and he is likely to miss Week 3.

Seattle certainly has the talent to be great. All that potential means nothing until the group can truly be long-term effective and productive. Maybe that will happen at some point this year. Or maybe the Seahawks simply have a lot of good pieces that never create a full puzzle.
