Another NFC West team has dropped the ball in the NFL Draft. The Arizona Cardinals made a somewhat questionable decision by taking Jeremiyah Love at No. 3, not because he wasn't a potential star but due to their positional needs. Then, taking Chase Bisontis in round 2 may have made more sense, but once again, they took another step back with their next selection.
Mike LaFleur's team used their third-round pick to get Miami quarterback Carson Beck. While there's a long shot that he will turn out to be a serviceable player, the Seattle Seahawks will likely knock him on his back multiple times in their two meetings per season.
The Cardinals are making moves to be just good enough to buy their regime some more time. That's right where the Seahawks want them, as it guarantees they might be stuck in a mediocrity spiral for a little longer.
The Seattle Seahawks will welcome Carson Beck to the NFC West with open arms
The Cardinals' quarterback room consists of Beck, Kedon Solvis (who will likely be cut), Gardner Minshew II, and Jacoby Brissett -- the early frontrunner to start. Even if Beck isn't QB1 from the jump, he should be in the mix to get the job at one point, and it wouldn't be shocking to see him be the starter in the final stretch of the season.
That can end in two different ways: Either he struggles, and the Cardinals continue to be a bottom-feeder, or he will play just well enough to make the front office stick with him instead of going after someone else in a much deeper QB class of 2027. Given Beck's extensive collegiate experience and traits, the latter sounds more likely.
The Seahawks should remain the team to beat in the division until proven otherwise, and the Cardinals are clearly a couple of tiers below. Having them stuck in the same spot for at least a couple of years is music to Mike Macdonald's ears, since he won't have to worry about them and they'll continue to be two easy wins on his schedule.
Macdonald has never lost to the Cardinals since taking over the team. The Seahawks are riding a nine-game winning streak against Arizona, and it's hard to believe Beck is going to flip the script in their favor.
Even though he was once considered to be the top quarterback prospect of his class, there's a reason why he fell from grace this drastically. He might end up being a solid backup or maybe even a low-tier starter, and he'll give the Cardinals just enough for them to wrongfully commit to him while better options find new homes.
