The Seattle Seahawks lost a lot of talent in free agency this past offseason. That is what happens when a team wins a Super Bowl with a lot of young talent that is immediately going to follow the title by entering free agency.
General manager John Schneider did the best he could, of course, but he couldn't afford everyone. The problem is that a couple of the former players are having outstanding seasons.
One will come back to play Seattle in Week 7, but let's start with a player who could conceivably find his way back to the Pacific Northwest in a trade.
- Could Riq Woolen return to the Seahawks?
- Kenneth Walker returns to the Pacific Northwest
- Boye Mafe stays hot
- Poona Ford suffers season-ending injury
- Geno Smith's lack of errors
Could Riq Woolen return to the Seahawks?
Woolen has had a good season so far, allowing only 51.7 percent of the passes thrown his way to be completed, giving up two touchdowns, and allowing more than 31 receiving yards in a game only once.
The issue is that the Eagles are trending toward a lost season, and Woolen only signed for one season. He is expendable, has been talked about by many as a potential trade piece, and Philadelphia would likely rather have draft value than the cornerback at this point.
Seattle has a need at cornerback that Woolen can fill. 12s know not to expect perfection from Woolen, but he has also proven that he can provide good coverage most of the time.
Kenneth Walker returns to the Pacific Northwest
Last season's Super Bowl MVP joined the Kansas City Chiefs in free agency and has been a terrific fit through five games. He leads the league in rushing yards with 665 and is averaging a league-leading 133.0 yards per game.
Walker isn't just trending toward having his best season; at his current pace, he would obliterate his previous personal best in many categories.
Seattle will see him up close in Week 7 as the Chiefs travel to the Pacific Northwest to play the Seahawks at Lumen Field. Seattle hasn't allowed a 100-yard rusher since October 2024. Walker is going to challenge that streak on Sunday.
Boye Mafe stays hot
Who would 12s rather have, Boye Mafe or Dante Fowler Jr.? The answer should clearly be the former, as Fowler has done very little after signing with Seattle in free agency, but Mafe has been good for his new team, the Cincinnati Bengals.
In five games, he has three sacks and five tackles for loss. In his last two games, he's combined for two sacks and four TFLs, so he's getting better as the season progresses.
Would Seattle be better with the edge rusher who is excellent against the run and has always been dangerous as a pass rusher? Absolutely, but the team wasn't going to match the Bengals' offseason offer of three seasons and as much as $60 million.
Poona Ford suffers season-ending injury
Ford was an undersized, undrafted free agent out of Texas when the Seahawks signed him in 2018, and he was a solid contributor for five seasons in Seattle. He has been a rotational star for three teams since he left the PNW, though.
He was having another solid season with the Los Angeles Rams in 2026, but he ruptured his triceps in Week 6 and will miss the rest of the year. The shame is that Ford has been a good guy and deserves good things to happen to him, even with an NFC West rival.
Geno Smith's lack of errors
After failing brutally in one season with the Las Vegas Raiders and head coach Pete Carroll after being traded by the Seattle Seahawks, Geno Smith has been pretty good on a bad New York Jets team this season. The most shocking part of his performance has been a lack of turnovers.
He has thrown only one interception and lost two fumbles. His interception rate of just .6 is the lowest of his career.
Smith is also completing 68.9 percent of his passes and has seven touchdowns. His team might only be 2-4, but the quarterback is playing winning football.
