Former Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren one step closer to being immortal

Holmgren learned on Tuesday he is one step closer to achieving a dream.

The Seattle Seahawks could begin to see a number of players from the Legion of Boom years get into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the 2025 class. In November, former safety Earl Thomas was named as a semifinalist for the next class. The next step is to see if Thomas is named as a finalist later in December.

One former member of the Seahawks who was not involved with the LOB is former head coach Mike Holmgren. He led Seattle to its first Super Bowl in the 2005 season, and the team made the playoffs every year between 2003 and 2007. He is arguably the second-best coach in franchise history. But he didn't just make his bones with Seattle.

To many, Holmgren might be better remembered as a coach for the Green Bay Packers. He coached Green Bay between 1992 and 1998, and his teams made two Super Bowls and won one. He won more overall games with the Seahawks and spent three more seasons coaching Seattle, but his winning percentage in Green Bay was far better than his in Seattle - .670 to .538.

Overall, Holmgren went 161-111 and his teams made the playoffs 12 times. Those numbers are worthy of a Hall of Fame induction, but the Hall makes getting in more difficult for anyone who is not a player. Only one coach a year makes the cut, and sometimes, not even one coach.

Holmgren is among five seniors candidates who were named as finalists for the 2025 Hall class. Those who have been chosen for induction will find out during the league's NFL Honors event that takes place over Super Bowl weekend in February. Besides Holmgren, the other candidates are Sterling Sharpe (who played for Holmgren with the Packers), Maxie Baughan, Jim Tyrer, and NFL co-founder Ralph Hay.

Of the five seniors candidates, if three of them get 80 percent or more of the vote, then they will be inducted. Tyrer might have some difficulty getting voted in because while he was a 10-time All-Star, eight of them in the AFL before the AFL-NFL merger, he also murdered his wife and then killed himself in 1980. If some voters feel uncomfortable enshrining Tyrer then that might mean Holmgren gets a few more votes than he might have otherwise.
