The New York Jets lost to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 13, but they led the game 21-7. How they got that lead was a bit lucky, as Seattle messed up a bunch of kickoffs and allowed a touchdown return by New York. New York could have led 24-7 or 28-7 before halftime until quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw a shocking interception to Seahawks defensive lineman Leonard Williams, who returned the pick for a touchdown.
In other words, New York should have led by more. Seattle's mistakes allowed them to get the lead, and that they could not hold the lead was the Jets' fault. And, well...a lot of credit should go to the Seahawks' defense. The Jets did not score after 10:40 was left in the second quarter. New York had few chances to do so. A Jet giving credit to anything else by the Seahawks' defense for the loss is simply sour grapes.
That is what Jets cornerback - and former Seattle CB - DJ Reed implied, though. Nearly immediately after the game, Reed tweeted to NFL officiating, "you FXCKING suck, yall should be ashamed of yall selves!" Reed was mad, but he was angry for the wrong reasons.
DJ Reed blames the officials instead of giving credit to the Seahawks
Was the officiating inconsistently called, at least the penalties? Sure. At halftime, only three flags had been accepted. In the second half, 14 penalties were accepted. It is almost as if the NFL has a mandate on how many penalties should be called a game and the Seahawks and Jets officiating crew led by Carl Cheffers was under the directed amount. But all the second-half flags were not the reason New York lost.
Instead, the Jets' inability to score a little after the first quarter was done, Rodgers' interception, and Seattle's beginning to run the ball a bit better were. Reed should only blame his team for losing. There were not even very many questionable calls during the game. An incomplete pass on an important third down to Jets receiver Davante Adams was called incomplete on the field, for instance, because it was, indeed, incomplete.
Reed has a right to be angry. But getting mad at the officials is not seeing the truth. His Jets should be better as they have the talent to be so, but they aren't playing as a team and Rodgers is a washed-up quarterback. Instead of unleashing rage at the officials, Reed should probably focus on what ails his team.
