Former Seahawks quarterback gets a second chance to be special
By Lee Vowell
The Seattle Seahawks could have three quarterbacks starting for various teams in the NFL for the second straight game in Week 14. Geno Smith is the starter for Seattle, of course, but he only became so in 2022 after the team traded Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos. As part of the trade, Denver sent Drew Lock to Seattle, and Lock became the backup to Smith.
Since Wilson washed out in Denver and Lock signed with the New York Giants this past offseason as a free agent, 12s could watch as Smith starts for Seattle, Lock starts for the Giants, and Wilson starts for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Oh, yeah. That part was left out. After getting released by the Broncos last offseason, the quarterback signed and now starts for Pittsburgh.
But let's focus on Lock for now. He was a stand-up guy in Seattle, and avidly rooted for Smith to do good things in Seahawks games even though Lock did not want to be a backup; he wanted to start. He proved he was a team-first player.
Former Seahawks quarterback Drew Lock to start his second straight game for the New York Giants
This was evident in Smith's respect for Lock after Lock was forced to start two games in 2023 due to an injury to Smith. Lock won one and lost one, but in the one he got the victory, which would be Week 15 against the Philadelphia Eagles, Smith cheered from the sidelines, sometimes giving a bit of advice to Lock, as Lock led Seattle to a last-minute victory.
Still, Lock wanted a chance to start in the NFL and he was not going to do that with the Seahawks as Seattle had Smith. Lock signed with the Giants, but after starting quarterback Daniel Jones asked for his release, New York chose to start QB3 Tommy DeVito over QB2 Lock. DeVito, though, got injured in Week 12 and Lock took over.
Lock started in Week 13, but that turned out to be a loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The quarterback had a classic game for him, but not for someone like Patrick Mahomes. Lock completed 21 of 32 passes but for no touchdowns and one interception. His career touchdown to interception ratio is now 28:24, and his won-lost record is a lousy 9-15.
But Lock was a likable player in Seattle, and many 12s probably hope he does well, as long as that success is not against the Seahawks. Good news for Lock fans, though. He will get a start in Week 14 against the 4-8 New Orleans Saints. If he follows the trend he had in 2023, he would be bad in one game (which he was versus the Cowboys), and good the next.
Drew Lock could be set for a great game against the Saints. Let's hope he does that. Let's also hope the Seahawks defeat the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, too.
