Jake Bobo's return may have saved the Seahawks from a massive mistake

Oh, thank goodness.

Jake Bobo was seemingly all but gone. He was extended an offer sheet from the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason that would have paid the wide receiver more than $5 million over two seasons. Instead, the Seattle Seahawks matched the offer, keeping thefan-favorite in the Pacific Northwest for a while longer.

The move might have a secondary positive effect, too. One that no one likely thought of when the Bobo offer was matched. Bringing back Bobo likely means the team wouldn't want to add wide receiver Stefon Diggs.

To be clear, Bobo is never going to be as productive as Diggs has been in his career as a pure receiver. That ultimately doesn't matter with the Seahawks, however. Diggs' off-field issues would probably mean he wouldn't be a good fit in the rebuilt culture of head coach Mike Macdonald.

General manager John Schneider isn't going to do anything to disrupt a good thing. Obviously, after winning the Super Bowl last season, Seattle has a very good thing going. While some might argue that the team needs a quality wideout who can take the pressure off Jaxon Smith-Njigba, that player shouldn't be Diggs.

With Bobo back and Rashid Shaheed re-signed in free agency, keeping those two players in a receiving group that also includes JSN, Cooper Kupp, and Tory Horton means the wideout room is full. None of those players would appear to be candidates to be released, so no spots are going to open soon.

While Shaheed might not be the kind of receiver who catches 90 passes in a season, he offers versatility, including special teams excellence, that makes him extremely valuable. Kupp is a voice of wisdom on a roster that is still quite young overall. Bobo is the kind of glue guy all good teams need, and he can surprise with an important catch in important games.

In fact, Bobo likely deserves more targets. What he lacks in raw speed, he somewhat makes up for in route-running precision. He's also terrific on special teams.

As for Tory Horton, if he can stay healthy, he might be the speedy and tall receiver who does well playing off of Smith-Njigba and Shaheed. He's a potentially impactful depth piece that furthers the point that the Seattle Seahawks simply wouldn't need Stefon Diggs.

Diggs is a free agent currently, cleared of most of his legal issues, and available to play with a team in 2026. He's past 30 years old, but still had a good season with the New England Patriots in 2025. The best part for 12s is that whenever he plays next season, he won't be having his home games at Lumen Field. That will need to happen somewhere else.
