Mike Macdonald offers no timeline on Seahawks' DK Metcalf's return (updated)
By Lee Vowell
Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald must hate giving any information on his players' injuries. He has said in the past that he only gives information on injuries once he is "forced" to. When asked about the status of wide receiver DK Metcalf on his radio show on Seattle Sports 710 AM, Macdonald was typically mum.
What is not clear is how hurt the receiver was in the second half against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 7. The play where Metcalf was apparently hurt saw the receiver catch a high pass near the sideline where he was pushed by a Falcons defender. This caused Metcalf to fall sideways to the ground where he banged his knee.
The issue could simply be a contusion. If that is the case, he likely should be available in Week 8 when Seattle plays the Buffalo Bills. After leaving the game, he stood on the sideline for some time but was then carted off the field later. Maybe Seattle did so just as a precaution or maybe Metcalf wanted a ride off the field. He has done the same before when he had to rush to the bathroom in 2022.
Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald mum of DK Metcalf's injury status
Macdonald said that there was optimism about Metcalf following the game, and things did not seem overly serious, but on Monday, the head coach said he had not spoken with Metcalf. This might be true, but that also seems somewhat unlikely as the team had a five-hour plane flight back to Seattle after the game.
This could simply be a case of Macdonald not wanting to give much away in terms of a player's injury. That is right as a coach. Macdonald is not a doctor and has to be told about the severity of injuries once that information is known. He then has to tell the media when asked.
There is also a good chance that Metcalf will be perfectly fine. Maybe he misses some practice this week to give him some rest. He doesn't have to practice; he knows the offensive system well enough and has a years-long rapport with quarterback Geno Smith. Even if the receiver misses the first couple of days of practice, 12s should not panic. Plus, Macdonald won't give us any real news until the team's final injury report is released on Friday.
Update: DK Metcalf has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 MCL sprain and is considered week-to-week, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
