Some Seattle Seahawks fans might not understand why the team took a chance on signing a player who is facing some extremely serious legal problems. Cornerback Terrion Arnold signed a one-year deal with Seattle this week, but he has also been charged with four counts of kidnapping and four counts of armed robbery.
Fans want to follow a team because they like the team, and if there is a player who may or may not be the best human being, that can be a detraction. The truth is that one cannot assume all the facts of the case surrounding Arnold, and those facts will play out once he has a hearing.
So why did Seattle sign the embattled Arnold? It's fairly simple, as head coach Mike Macdonald told the media a day before the Seahawks are set to play the Dallas Cowboys in preseason Week 1.

Macdonald said, "I think it was an opportunity to bring on a player that we felt strongly about during the draft process (in 2024), and we also understand that it's a serious situation with a legal matter...and let the league decide if and when (he can) return to play... We feel really strongly about our locker room and the team. We had a great visit with Terrion, and obviously we knew him going throughout the process, and I referenced the folks that had been in his corner throughout the whole process as well, and we respect those people."
The coach also said that no timeline exists for when Arnold would arrive at Seahawks camp, but with the implication that he would be in Renton soon. The issue isn't necessarily a legal one, but simply a logistical one. The cornerback has visited with several teams and needs to work out when he can get to the Pacific Northwest.
Even if Arnold practices, he might not be able to play in real games right away. The NFL, as Macdonald alluded to, could suspend the cornerback. That could potentially last half the season or more.
Of note is that Atlanta Falcons edge rusher James Pearce was suspended for eight games on Friday, as he has had domestic violence accusations levied against him this past offseason. Arnold's potential suspension could be at least that long.
The risk in signing Terrion Arnold is obviously real. Not only could his legal issues be disruptive to the chemistry of the team, but he also needs enough practice to prove worthy of being a valued member of the team in real games. He was a first-round selection for the Detroit Lions in 2024, but he hasn't lived up to that choice yet.
Part of his issue might be that he was a poor scheme fit with the Lions, but he still needs to show he can be a better fit in the Seattle Seahawks defense. Not until he practices quite a bit will he show that.
Of course, Arnold also has to show he isn't a bad human being, which might be a tougher thing to do. His legal situation is a serious one. Earning the respect of Seahawks fans might take a very long time.
