The good news is that defensive back Nick Emmanwori is expected to be back by Week 1 when the Seattle Seahawks play the New England Patriots. He will begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list after needing some corrective ankle surgery early in July.

He waited on the surgery even though he hurt the ankle early last season. The hope was that offseason rehab and strength-building exercises would help the problem go away, but that didn't happen. Thankfully, the surgery wasn't major, and he will only miss a chunk of camp.

That doesn't dismiss Seahawks fans' fears about the ascending star, however. While he might never get hurt again, one can logically worry that his true evolution as a player might be stunted by injuries. As a rookie, he was hurt twice, and both times were to his ankle.

Nick Emmanwori injury update is good for the Seattle Seahawks but still concerning for fans

In Week 1, he sustained a high-ankle sprain against the San Francisco 49ers after only four snaps. He then missed three games, returned in Week 5, and was able to stay healthy the rest of the regular season. During Super Bowl practice, though, he injured his right ankle again; this time it was his lower ankle. He played through pain in the title game.

Joints don't heal easily when they are tasked with constant pressure and movement. That means ailments can linger for much longer for an athlete than someone in another walk of life. Tennis superstar Carlos Alcaraz injured his wrist in April and hasn't played since. He is expected to return in August, but no one quite knows if he will be fully healthy.

That same worry can transpose to Nick Emmanwori, but not just in 2026. The hope is that the defensive back's ankle problem is only a temporary issue, and that hurting the same ankle twice in his first season is simply a coincidence. What would be a shame is if Emmanwori is hampered by constant injuries to his ankle, and he never fulfills the promise of year one.

He is a special athlete and instantly became integral to Mike Macdonald's Seattle Seahawks defense. He is listed as a safety, sure, but as 12s know, Emmanwori is far too versatile to be limited to one spot. Sometimes he is a cornerback, and sometimes an edge rusher. His presence allows Macdonald to disguise his alignments, augmenting the impact his elite defense has.

The corrective surgery Emmanwori had in July hopefully only means he misses a bunch of practice. He understands his fit in the scheme and shouldn't be affected too much by not participating in drills. The hope is that his ankle problem doesn't become a long-term problem.
