Geno Smith and Russell Wilson have the same odds of doing this in 2024

Geno Smith is probably going to be QB1 for the Seattle Seahawks in 2024. The team has until Friday to decide to guarantee Smith's base salary of a bit over $12 million for next year and that is probably going to happen. Moving on from Smith after that is not impossible but a move would be unlikely. Unless the team tries to trade Smith, of course.

Former Seahawks QB1 Russell Wilson might not be a starter next year. He was benched in the last two games of this past season by his current team, the Denver Broncos, because he reportedly refused to re-work his contract to help the team. There is certainly no guarantee that Wilson will get back to being Denver's starter next season and he just as likely might not be with the team.

According to FanDuel, however, Smith and Wilson have the same odds of being named the NFL's MVP in 2024. Neither player has very good odds, but that Smith has the same chance as Wilson is fairly ridiculous. And, well...unfair to Smith. Smith and Wilson currently are +10000 to win MVP, tied for 25th in the league.

Wilson, though, has not been an overly productive quarterback for many years now. His numbers were not bad this past season, but he only threw for 3,070 yards and his total QBR was 50.7. He was second in the league in game-winning drives with 4. But being benched will obviously tarnish the little good he did.

Since Wilson was traded to Denver in 2022 and Smith was inserted as the starter for the Seahawks, Smith has been the better quarterback and it hasn't been close. Smith led the league in game-winning drives (5) this season but even though he wasn't quite as good as in 2022, Smith's total QBR was still much better than Wilson's (59.5).

The point is that oddsmakers should not have Wilson tied with Smith in MVP odds. Likely neither player will come close to winning the award, but Smith is a better quarterback right now and he has better offensive skill position players than Wilson. And that is assuming Wilson does start for Denver next year.

Patrick Mahomes is the favorite to win MVP at +600 while 2023 MVP Lamar Jackson is fourth at +900. Two other Seahawks were listed among those with a betting chance of winning MVP. Running back Kenneth Walker and receiver DK Metcalf are far down the list at +40000. Neither are quarterbacks so don't waste your money betting on them as the MVP will definitely go to a quarterback.
