Grade the trade: Seahawks add Dak Prescott in proposed trade

The Dallas Cowboys have a weird situation. They remain relevant even though the team has won a total of four playoff games since 1997 (the Seattle Seahawks have won 14 playoff games in that same timeframe). Plus, Dallas always seems a bit more interesting nationally when they have some silly drama surrounding the team. And Dallas likes its drama.

One of the storylines coming out of Dallas this offseason is that some players and fans seem to think owner/general manager Jerry Jones did not do enough to help the offense. Quarterback Dak Prescott is in the final season of his current contract and the Cowboys might not be able to afford him next offseason. This means if Dallas is underperforming this season, maybe Dallas will trade him.

The Seahawks have a quarterback, of course. In fact, they have two QBs on the roster with starting experience. QB1 Geno Smith will turn 34 years old during the 2024 season, but he could play for another three or four years and be good. In the last two seasons, he has ranked seventh and 15th, respectively, in Total QBR. He isn't a bad quarterback and he can win games.

Seahawks trading for Dak Prescott would be a troublesome move

That hasn't stopped national pundits from dismissing the quality of Smith's recent past. Many have guessed that should the Cowboys move on from Prescott, the Seahawks could be a potential destination. ESPN's Bill Barnwell, for instance, recently tweeted that rumor. Bleacher Report also suggested in a "bold predictions" article that Prescott will be traded and Seattle could be a player in the move.

Trade for Prescott

A website called Gridiron Heroics picked up what B/R was laying down and ran with it. As opposed to Bleacher Report, who offered no suggestions of what the Cowboys might get in any potential trade, GH gave a guess, and the scenario seems, well...way off.

Gridiron Heroics stated that if Prescott is traded to Seattle then the Seahawks could give DK Metcalf or Tyler Lockett plus a future first-round pick back to the Cowboys. That seems rather silly. First of all, what would happen to Smith or Sam Howell? Would Seattle carry three quarterbacks on the roster? Plus, imagine how much morale would be affected if Smith stayed on the team.

Also, why add a quarterback if Seattle is also going to trade one of its better receivers? Lockett might make sense because his contract is huge in 2025 and possibly Seattle needs to make cap room in order to keep Prescott past 2024. It still makes no sense to add Prescott but then give him diminished offensive weapons.

Lastly, if Dallas is moving Prescott partly because they do not want to have to find the money to re-sign him as a free agent, why would they bring in another expensive player such as Metcalf? Only getting one first-round draft pick seems like too little as well.

Dak Prescott is not going to be traded to the Seahawks. DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett are not going to be traded during the 2024 season. While discussing any trade is fun, one should also know Prescott to Seattle is not going to be a reality.
