Seattle Seahawks fans are learning quite a bit quite quickly about new head coach Mike Macdonald and how different he is from Pete Carroll. Carroll was fairly open about injuries and what he knew, for instance. Macdonald does not like to give injury information.

Another difference is that Carroll spoke openly about watch game film almost immediately after a game. He wanted to see what went right and what went wrong as quickly as possible after the game ended. That did not allow him to process what he saw live versus what he saw on film, though.

On his weekly radio show on Seattle Sports 710 AM, Macdonald was brutally honest about what he does after a game. Most coaches will tell you that they immediately watch film and stay up hours trying to fix issues. That might not be fact, but that would be the truth they are trying to sell.

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald gets brutally honest about when he watches game film

Macdonald says he does not watch film. The reason is that he feels doing so is "too emotional." Specifically in Week 2, Macdonald knew the defense was having several issues popping up during the game stopping the run. Instead of blaming the players for what they were doing on the field, Macdonald blamed himself for the pre-game scheme he implemented.

What did Macdonald do instead of watching tape? He joked around with cornerback Devon Witherspoon and tried watching The Last Kingdom on Netflix. He failed. On the flight back from Boston to Seattle, Macdonald fell asleep.

That might sound silly or it might imply that instead of getting so worked up about issues that can be fixed in practice, the Seahawks head coach allows time to process what just happened. He knew from his own eyes what had occurred and he did not need the film straightaway to re-emphasize what he already knew to be true.

The bottom line is that there is clearly a new approach to Seahawks football under Mike Macdonald from Pete Carroll. The team has started 2-0 and could make it three straight victories to begin the 2024 season as the team will face a Tua Tagovailoa-less Miami Dolphins team in Week 3. Macdonald's approach has worked so far so there is no need to change anything about what he is doing.
