Proposed signing has Bobby Wagner going to worst place imaginable for Seahawks fans

Seattle could lose Wagner in free agency for a second time.

Watching linebacker Bobby Wagner leave in free agency once before was not fun for most 12s. After being released in the 2022 offseason, Wagner left for the Los Angeles Rams and was named Second-Team All-Pro. Thankfully, the Rams then released him last offseason and he chose to re-sign with the Seattle Seahawks. This past season, Wagner was once again named as an All-Pro.

But Seattle only signed Wagner for one year last offseason which makes him a free agent in 2024. Wagner returning to Seattle feels unlikely. Some of that is due to Seattle relieving Pete Carroll of his coaching duties and replacing Carroll with Mike Macdonald. The coaching change needed to be made but with Carroll gone, Wagner has no allegiance to the Seattle coaching staff.

The future Hall of Famer will likely be asking himself if he wants to keep playing into 2024 and beyond. He is certainly good enough and led the NFL in tackles in 2023. If he chooses to retire, he will have done so after having another excellent season and not letting time defeat him. He also stays healthy enough to consistently help whoever his team is.

Could Bobby Wagner leave the Seahawks for the 49ers?

Nick San Miguel at Niner Noise, FanSided's San Francisco 49ers site, has proposed a devious signing for the NFL team closest to Seattle, though. San Miguel feels that with San Francisco likely being without Dre Greenlaw at the beginning of the 2024 season (Greenlaw tore his Achilles in the 49ers' Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and could miss nine months or more with the injury) Wagner would be an excellent replacement Greenlaw. The fact is that San Miguel is correct, but Wagner leaving for the 49ers still would not be any easier for 12s.

12s might still have PTSD from Richard Sherman being released by Seattle before the 2018 season and then Sherman signed with San Francisco. In 2019, Sherman was named Second-Team All-Pro and made another Pro Bowl. Meanwhile, Seattle struggled to find many quality cornerbacks. Sometimes teams have to make financial decisions to the salary cap, such as Seattle did with Sherman, but that only means the team is going to be worse without the player.

The other draw for Wagner to the 49ers is that the team has recently hired K.J. Wright, Wagner's long-time linebacker partner in Seattle, as an assistant linebacker coach. Plus, San Francisco is a very good team with a chance at making a Super Bowl run in 2024. Wagner would be leaving the Seahawks for a team that has a good friend as a new coach and that team also is capable of being better than Seattle next season.
