If one thought that the Seattle Seahawks making a move for Trevis Gipson was with an eye on replacing Darrell Taylor, the truth is actually much worse than that. Taylor couldn't play the run and was an inconsistent pass rusher. Gipson is a decent pass rusher. Uchenna Nwosu is excellent against the run and the pass.

The issue is that Nwosu will not be available for a reported six-to-eight weeks after injury his knee against the Cleveland Browns in preseason Week 3. The injury occurred on a chop block. While the play might have looked dirty, it really wasn't. There would be no real reason for the Browns to have a healthy dislike for either Nwosu or Seattle and want to intentionally hurt someone.

The issue was simply poor form by the Browns' pulling right guard who did not have the athletic ability to catch up with a rushing Nwosu. The running back then hit Nwosu high which caused the injury. The edge rusher jogged off the field but was later seen in the medical tent. Tests run on the knee this week showed Nwosu sprained his MCL.

Seahawks edge rusher Uchenna Nwosu to miss a number of weeks to begin the 2024 season

This means he could start the season on PUP which would mean he misses at least four games. The timetable is as long as it is and Seattle still having two weeks until Week 1 could mean Nwosu returns by Week 5.

This would also mean that Nwosu will not have played a real game in about a year. He was injured in Week 7 in 2023 - he tore a pec - and missed the rest of the season. The Seahawks had no real replacement for him and the run defense greatly suffered and there was no player able to take his consistent production rushing the passer either.

The positive part could be that second-year pro Derick Hall has had a fantastic training camp and preseason and should be the one to take the largest number of Nwosu's snaps. Mafe will become even more important and will need to constantly supply pressure. Gipson will need to prove he can be solid against the run.

If nothing else, at least Nwosu will be back early in the season, barring a delay in his recovery, and he should be available for most of the year. There is little doubt the Seahawks will miss his presence on the field, though.
