Seahawks concern No. 2: So many new pieces on defense

Along with adding Jones and Reed, Seattle also brought back linebacker Bobby Wagner, signed LB Devin Bush, signed safety Julian Love, and drafted cornerback Devon Witherspoon. There seems to be more overall talent on the defense. But just like an offensive line, defenses need time to build the cohesion and communication that makes them efficient and productive.

It is tough to catch back up to being a playoff contender if a team loses a few winnable games at the beginning of a season. We don't yet know who the Seahawks will play at the beginning of the 2023 campaign but we should know that this week. The worst-case scenario for Seattle would be to start the season against teams with excellent offense such as the Cincinnati Bengals, Philadelphia Eagles, and Dallas Cowboys. Seattle might be in a better position to play those teams later in the season.

Bobby Wagner should be able to step back into his former role of calling the plays on defense. Quandre Diggs should be fine calling out the alignments in the secondary. Those players aren't the concern. The potential issue is the players listening to Wagner and Diggs and those players being in the correct positions.

Tariq Woolen was fantastic in his rookie season, but it also cannot be disputed that there were times, especially on crossing patterns, when he missed his assignment and that led to a big gain or a touchdown for the opposing team. With so many new players, it could be that the defense has even more blown plays. That could cost the team a game or three.
