3 Seahawks who played themselves off the roster after preseason Week 2

Roster decisions for Seattle are likely taking shape and these three players do not need to be on the team.

The Seattle Seahawks are done with two of their three preseason games in 2024. They have won one and lost another, but who wins and who loses a preseason contest does not truly matter. Instead, the games allow coaches to decide who should keep on the active 53-man roster and who to let go.

To be sure, there were some positives in the loss to the Tennessee Titans. After a bad couple of series to begin the game, Sam Howell played much better, completed 11 of his 14 passes, and threw a dime to Eason Winston, Jr. for a touchdown. Howell should be a solid QB2.

Other players did not impress, however. The three players that follow are fighting for their football lives. None should make the active roster based on their preseason play. At least one of them should not even be signed to the practice squad.

Three Seahawks who don't deserve to make the 2024 roster based on their preseason Week 2 play

PJ Walker

Walker has to hope that he is going to make the Seahawks as QB3. This would likely mean he would be among the initial roster cuts and then be re-signed to the practice squad. NFL teams can have a third quarterback on the sidelines to be able to go into games should QB1 and QB2 be injured. QB3 must show they can run the offensive scheme and be somewhat productive.

Walker was not exactly lights out in preseason Week 1, but he was downright atrocious against the Titans in preseason Week 2. The numbers will show he was four of eight on passes, so not terrible it would seem. Only, the depth of his completed passes was minimal. He was inaccurate, indecisive, and did not seem to understand what "touch" meant on throws.

Seattle appears to have been so dismayed by Walker's play that Seattle brought Casey Bauman in for a visit on Sunday. Bauman hasn't played a down of football in the league and hardly played in college until his last season. This would imply Seattle is desperate to find any other QB3 option besides Walker.

D.J. James

Sixth-round draft picks are not guaranteed roster spots, of course. Still, the Seahawks clearly thought James had potential when they watched him play at Auburn and they decided to take him in the draft. Either that or Seattle could not tell James apart from his Auburn teammate, Nehemiah Pritchett, and the Seahawks simply chose both players.

James has not been awful in practice, but he was terrible against Tennessee. He picked up a number of penalties, kept a drive alive for the Titans, missed a seemingly sure tackle that allowed Tennessee running back Julius Chestnut to break free for a 23-yard run, and allowed a passing touchdown. James allowed completions all three times he was targeted for 45 yards, 21 of which came after the receiver caught the ball.

Seattle currently has too many cornerbacks on the roster, and two of them will probably be released. One could be veteran Artie Burns. The way James is playing in the preseason, he should be the other corner to be let go.

Blake Lynch

Lynch was unlikely to have any chance of making the 53-man roster even had he played well in the preseason. He might have been a candidate to make the practice squad, though. The linebacker has bounced around the league since 2020 with potentially his greatest contribution being downing a punt for the Minnesota Vikings in 2020.

He likely proved he doesn't even need to make the practice squad with his play in preseason Week 2. Lynch whiffed on two of his six tackle attempts, allowed receptions on both of his pass targets and appeared to be a step slower than everyone else on the field. Lynch making the practice squad would only take a spot away from a more deserving player.
