Seahawks somehow find a way to win even in awful Week 5 loss
By Lee Vowell
The Seattle Seahawks blew it. Against a diminished New York Giants in Week 5, Seattle's defense was terrible. New York had 420 total yards, and it held the ball for nearly 15 minutes longer than Seattle, which thoroughly dominated the game. Seattle got a fluke touchdown to lead 7-0. Otherwise, the Giants should have won by more than three touchdowns.
Seattle is now 3-2 and should have been 4-1 and facing the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6. The 49ers were expected to be Seattle's greatest challenge to taking the NFC West crown this season. Now, who knows? Even the 49ers are struggling.
In fact, Seattle, even with a wretched loss to the Giants, found a way to pull a positive from the week. San Francisco lost to the Arizona Cardinals, which pushed both the 49ers and the Cardinals to 2-3. The Los Angeles Rams lost as well, so they are now 1-4. Seattle still leads the division by one game, even though they have lost their last two games.
Seahawks find a way to pull victory from jaws of defeat in NFC West standings
The issue is that the Seahawks should be up by two games and have a bit of breathing distance between themselves and San Francisco. Arizona is 203, of course, but they likely are not a long-term threat to what Seattle hopes to do. San Francisco is.
Seattle now has only four games before they play the 49ers in Week 6 on Thursday Night Football. With a victory, San Francisco would overtake the Seahawks for the NFC West lead. The 49ers would be up by a half-a-game due to having the head-to-head advantage. Heck, should the Cardinals win also in Week 6, Seattle would drop to third in the division because of the head-to-head advantage.
So yeah...In a way, there is a positive for Seattle from their Week 5 loss. Only for four days, though. Seattle has to defeat the 49ers because otherwise, a team like Seattle that had postseason hopes would move to a team trying to stay out of last place. The way the Seahawks played in Week 5 against the Giants, there should be little hope that Seattle can defeat San Francisco.
