Tyler Lockett certifies Mike Macdonald's first Seahawks win with a ridiculous catch
By Lee Vowell
The Seattle Seahawks offense certainly was not perfect against the Denver Broncos. In fact, there should be a lot of concerns. Maybe it's just a matter of quarterback Geno Smith shaking off some rust and the offense being more cohesive, but the unit needs work.
Denver led 13-9 at halftime when Seattle - nor the Broncos, to be fair - could get nothing consistently going against Denver's defense. Geno Smith started the game by being sacked and then threw an interception. All those preseason happy feelings about how good the offense might be under new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb all but vanished.
Then, to start the second half, running back Kenneth Walker came alive (he was finally given the chance) and scored on a 23-yard touchdown to put Seattle up for good. The Seahawks would extend their lead to 26-13 before a touchdown by Denver with just over two minutes left made the game 26-20.
Tyler Lockett's one-handed grab cements the Seahawks' Week 1 victory
Denver had two timeouts and the two-minute warning left to try to get the ball back and have one more chance at a possible game-winning drive. Seattle's defense had mostly limited rookie Bo Nix for Denver as he he finished 26 of 42 passing but for only 138 yards and he had two interceptions. He did run for a touchdown, though.
Seahawks receiver Tyler Lockett was not going to let Denver get the ball back, however. After an offsides penalty by Denver to give the Seahawks a third-and-six opportunity from their own 29-yard line, Smith threw a pass out right to Lockett who was well covered. The veteran stuck out his left arm, was able to corral the catch one-handed, and run forward enough for a first down.
The grab was classic Lockett. He has made a living of catching passes no one expected him to get and turning those receptions into points or first down. Had he not caught Smith's pass, Seattle would have had to punt and who knows what would have happened.
Lockett led the team in Week 1 with catches and receiving yards (six and 77, respectively). Again, the offense was not pretty in Week 1. Tyler Lockett made it look a lot better than it was.
