The Seattle Seahawks Week 2 victory over the New England Patriots was not wide receiver Tyler Lockett's finest hour. He did not play poorly, but he was hardly involved at all. This was just a week after Lockett was instrumental in the Seahawks' victory over the Denver Broncos. Lockett being a veteran and a good person, though, did not let the lack of targets bother him.

Lockett was part of two pass interference calls that went against the Patriots that had a hand in helping Seattle get the victory. The first was in the second quarter when quarterback Geno Smith targeted Lockett in the end zone but Lockett was unable to catch the ball while being mugged by a New England defender.

More importantly, Lockett was part of a pass interference call in overtime that put Seattle into Patriots territory. Seattle still had a ways to go to be able to kick a field goal, so the play did not determine the outcome of the game, but Patriots fans and players voiced their opinion immediately that they thought the call was bogus.

Patriots cornerback says Seahawks receiver Tyler Lockett told him pivotal call should not have been made

Was it? It was iffy. New England cornerback Jon Jones had the coverage on Lockett and there was certainly contact. Both players also turned to see when the ball was arriving and many times PI is not called in that case. Lockett had no chance to catch the ball because of Jones' arm being on his, however.

Jones said after the game that Lockett told him, "That's not a penalty." The Seahawks receiver might have simply been playing nice if he really did say that. Maybe he even thought there should not have been a penalty, but Lockett also likely knew the call could have gone either way and that the PI helped his team.

Maybe Jones was just saying what he thought Lockett said. Or maybe he was just peeved that the call went against him.

The bottom line is that the Seahawks played well enough to win and deserved to win. Seattle still had to work their way down the field to get into field goal range and the Patriots needed to stop Seattle and could not do it. Seattle is now 2-0 to begin the season and, because the San Francisco 49ers lost to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, the Seahawks are in first place in the NFC West.
