How does $30 million a season grab you? More importantly, how does a reported $30 million a season offer from the Seattle Seahawks grab cornerback Devon Witherspoon? So far, he seemingly hasn't jumped at it.
Fans can take a breath, though. A deal will almost certainly get done between the team and player, and there is every reason to believe that happens before the 2026 season begins. What isn't yet known is exactly how much of the money will be guaranteed, and how much the average annual salary will be.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the amount offered to Witherspoon would be the second-highest in the league. Los Angeles Rams cornerback Trent McDuffie leads the way at $31 million after he signed an extension after being traded to LA from the Kansas City Chiefs this past offseason.

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Sauce Gardner and Houston Texans CB Derek Stingley Jr. each make $30 million annually, the amount Rapoport said the Seahawks offered Witherspoon. To be fair, while that amount of cash is something most humans will never see, Seattle's corner was right to initially reject the offer, assuming that is what happened.
Witherspoon should ask for more than what McDuffie received. The Seahawks player is more versatile than the Rams player and more necessary in Mike Macdonald's scheme, at least to have the defense operate at an elite level. Plus, why would a Seattle player not want to be paid more than an NFC West rival?
To complicate matters, Witherspoon is represented by the same firm, Wind Sports Group, that represents New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez. Both were first-round picks in 2023, and both will want extensions sooner rather than later. In other words, right now. But the agency isn't going to help one player by not helping the other.
Both deserve high-end contracts, but the agency could not want to commit to a deal for either player yet because they don't want to diminish what either corner can make, but also don't want to make one of their clients mad by getting a big deal for one and not the other.
This is why $30 million seems like a doable number for Devon Witherspoon and the Seattle Seahawks, and the player might accept that, but possibly not the agency. Not yet, anyway. The expectation, even with the transfers of sale happening for the team, is that a Witherspoon deal gets done quite soon. At which point, Seahawks fans everywhere can let out a sigh of relief.
